Conditions We Treat
The retina and vitreous gel together encompass approximately 80% of the entire eye. Many conditions can affect these two interconnected structures. This is a list of some, though not all, of the conditions that we manage at Beacon Retina.
Retinal Tear or Detachment
Usually preceded by floaters or flashes of light and requires urgent treatment with laser or surgery

Diabetic Retinopathy
The severity of disease is related to the level of glucose control; may not cause symptoms in early stages

Retinal Artery or Vein Occlusion
Can be predisposed by risk factors leading to poor blood flow such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol

Age-Related Macular Degeneration
The leading cause of vision loss in Americans over age 60 and comes in two forms: wet and dry

Macular Edema
Known as retinal swelling and can stem from many causes, including previous eye surgery, including cataract surgery

Epiretinal Membrane
Also known as macular pucker and can be caused by trauma, inflammation, or simply aging

Macular Hole
Causes a blind spot in the central vision, usually repaired with surgery, though small holes may heal with eye drops

Lattice Degeneration
May be associated with myopia (nearsightedness) and can lead to retinal holes, tears and detachments

Uveitis
Comes in many forms and can occur sporadically or be associated with autoimmune conditions or infections

Central Serous Chorioretinopathy
Fluid accumulation underneath the retina leads to blurry or distorted central vision, usually affecting reading

Choroidal Nevus
Commonly referred to as a freckle or mole under the retina; requires regular monitoring for possibility of melanoma

Trauma
Severe trauma, including globe rupture and intraocular foreign bodies, typically involves the retina
